When you think of classic Midwestern flavors, what do you think of? That was the question the Casey's culinary team was tasked with answering. After much deliberation, and trial and error, they came up with a pizza that tastes exactly like the heart of the country. First, we started with our classic handmade Casey's crust. Then we topped it with Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce, pulled pork, bacon, and our special ingredient, fire roasted corn. We then topped the whole thing with our delicious 100% whole milk mozzarella cheese, and we knew we had a winner on our hands.
We knew a pizza this creative and unique needed a great name. We thought long and hard, kicking around various names. Then we realized: why not ask the people who know best, our loyal pizza fans? That was the beginning of the Midwest Mystery Contest.
We nicknamed the pizza the Midwest Mystery and started accepting name submissions from our guests on September 1. By the time the names submissions closed, we had nearly 18,000 names to sort through! After selecting the top three, we then asked our guests for help again: we needed their votes to select the finalists. Fourteen thousand votes later, and we had our winner.
A pizza this big needed a big celebration for its official launch. Our big celebration was Casey's LARGEST Pizza Party! We headed to downtown Des Moines, IA and threw a huge bash on September 28. Games, music, and, of course, free slices of Midwest Mystery Pizza! We also revealed our contest winner: John E. from Iowa, and his winning name "The Midwestern."
