Update on Cage-Free Eggs

June 25, 2021

On July 26, 2016, Casey’s provided the following statement:

Casey's is announcing its commitment to work closely with its suppliers to source 100% of its eggs from cage-free hens by 2025 based upon available supply and affordability to its customers. Although our egg business is relatively small, this demonstrates our commitment to the ethical treatment of animals.

Casey’s is pleased to provide the following update as of June 25, 2021:

While Casey’s does not yet directly source any cage-free eggs, its Food Service Team has recently completed the development of a comprehensive plan internally and with its valued egg suppliers, including a timeline and conversion and customer insights strategy, to support its goal of sourcing 100% of its eggs from cage-free hens by 2025 based upon available supply and affordability to its customers. Immediate next steps for Casey’s in implementing the goal include negotiating an appropriate cage-free supply agreement in the upcoming fiscal year, followed by its suppliers establishing and completing their cage-free sourcing specific to Casey’s, certain internal product testing and process development and the timely introduction of cage-free products into Casey’s stores.

On March 9, 2023, Casey’s provided the following update:

Since the June 25, 2021 update (above), Casey’s is proud to convey that, among other things, it has taken the following actions related to cage-free eggs: held a large number of meetings on the topic, both internally and with our primary supplier, including a half-day “summit” for further discussions, retained a third-party consultant to evaluate cage-free sourcing risk and market conditions, completed a cage-free consumer case study, and completed, and are in the planning stages of, certain cage-free product testing.

In addition, during its 2023 fiscal year, Casey’s converted 100% of its hardboiled eggs to cage-free, bringing its current cage-free total to approximately 14% of all eggs sold at retail. Casey’s does not yet directly source any other cage-free eggs; however, it will provide updates on its cage-free activities and/or progress in its annual ESG reports, which are typically released in late summer or early fall of each year.
